I walked past a woman in the supermarket yesterday who was sub-consciously humming the tune the supermarket had playing. An ear worm, the song ‘stuck in her head’. What fascinates me is that ideas work in exactly the same way. They’re not ‘our’ ideas, they occupy us, seducing us. When we watch the political battles of today, we’re not watching people arguing, we’re watching a handful of powerful ideas slugging it out, with people as their pawns. We need to stop fighting each other and start fighting the ideas.
