All burning of fossil fuels is grossly inefficient. Two-thirds of the energy is lost as heat. For example a petrol or diesel car’s fabled ‘range’ is actually bought by putting over 3000km worth of energy into a tank, and getting 700-800km of driving out of it. By electrifying everything, including transport, the world will need less than half the energy it’s using right now.
