Recent engineering studies have realised something about our transition to full renewables. The grid as a whole only needs 12 hours of storage for us to go 100% renewables. To do that you install 150% of your usual energy needs, as wind and solar. Not 100%. That extra 50% removes the need for any long-term storage at all, of over 12 hours. (Adding extra solar and wind is very cheap.) It also means you have a huge amount (that extra 50%) of basically free extra energy to use, in sunny weather. How’s free sound, as an energy price?
