What if the entire world, no matter what scale you look at, was nothing but mixtures? Our thinking and feelings can make us want there to be pure things, that are not mixed. But in reality, everything is a mixture. Everything is messy. There isn’t order and disorder, there are just mixtures of varying degrees of messiness. This is, I find, a profoundly liberating way to look at everything. It’s how the ancient atomists looked at the world too. People are mixtures, societies are, politics is, relationships, rocks, paint, clouds - it’s all mixtures. There are no opposites, things are not hot or cold, subject or object, science or religion - they’re mixtures.
