Iconoclasts were famously known as the people who would go into churches to smash ‘idols’. All the beautiful iconography in churches was their enemy, which they saw as a distraction from true religion. But iconoclasm went on to become our world. We hate mediators or intermediaries, we want purity. We hate institutions: we hate government, we hate the law, we hate the church, we hate the press, we don’t trust knowledge. We think politicians should just ‘say it how it is’, that religion is a ‘lie’. We won’t compromise on things, because that would mean surrendering some of our purity. And we hate the people who end up having to make those compromises for us, because we refuse to. We protest, we don’t build. Down with the establishment.
