‘Feeling low’, ‘feeling down’ - the reference to how close to the ground we are is very revealing. It’s impossible to separate our psychology from our relationship with gravity. We talk of somebody being ‘well balanced’, not always recognising the connection again with gravity and balance. All psychology is postural, because it’s about our relationship with the world around us. Not ‘posture’ as in some static position in space, but as in our state of balance. Somebody who feels low has withdrawn from poised interaction with the details of their life activities, which in turn destroys their balance and forces slumps and slouches.
