The FB outage yesterday made me think of public squares. Cities used to revolve around them, a place that was a dedicated space for the public, as a group. In modern times I think TV played this role for a long time, it became the public space. Now I think it might be Facebook. We love and hate FB, all at the same time. But like a lonely old person turning on the TV to feel connected to society, I think its importance is not so much what’s on it, as the social space it provides.
