On a holy day, I think we need to understand why, once a week, entire communities would gather for the Sunday church service. Modern thinking describes these people as credulous, believing in fairytales. I think there’s something much more important going on here, whether you believe in a God or not. Once a week, entire communities would spend the whole morning discussing and thinking about eternal things. In beautiful surroundings, they would take their everyday lives and think about them through the lens of eternal themes. And then take what they had learned back out into those everyday lives, to weave eternal themes into them in all sorts of ways. Church and religion was the practical, weekly way communities ensured that what they did the other 6 days created a society focused on the long-term. Eternity. We need that back, in some way.
