Klee's Twittering Machine. Music is more than anything else a territorial thing. Like dogs pissing to mark territory, music began in the marking out of a space with sound. Refrains. Birds use song for this. Humans do too. And it's not just a physical space, it's an animal's or human's whole being that gets marked out by sound in this way. Teenagers are usually noisy, it's their way to own space in a world that doesn't yet have a place for them. Bikies are noisy for the same reason. An essential part of growing up for most people is having favourite music and musicians. This is a full-on territorial thing, people will defend their favourite artists or type of music viciously, it's an intrinsic part of how they feel themselves as a person. We hate politics but we love music, even though how we use music is very similar to politics, and even more territorial because it helps define our own identities.
