The Holy Grail of medical science is how to treat inflammation. Most diseases that harm or kill us have a link to inflammation. Heart diseases, cancers, neurological diseases etc. We know how to suppress inflammation, but doing that also turns off the immune system, which produces the inflammation. And that’s of course very dangerous for our health in other ways. So, how to suppress inflammation while protecting the immune response? Welcome - the Gliptins. Most famous now in their form as weight loss drugs, like Ozempic and Mounjaro. But obesity is also an inflammatory condition, why I often say the calorie theory of weight (which sees diet and exercise as the cure) is so wrong and so damaging. The Gliptins target inflammation in obesity, which is why they’re so effective there. But they’re showing remarkable effect well beyond weight loss. The Gliptins may be the Holy Grail, the way to suppress inflammation in a targeted way and provide enormous therapeutic relief for many of our chronic diseases. Or even cures, by combining the Gliptins with other ‘small molecules’. (Small molecules means able to be absorbed easily by the blood stream, as a pill.) Combining multiple small molecules together with Gliptins, allows the Gliptins to control inflammation, while the other molecules target the other mechanisms of the disease, with the immune system. Normally the inflammatory response overwhelms the other treatments. For example, combining a Gliptin with an anti-viral may allow the complete removal of virus from a body - viruses often remain in your body, stored in reservoirs. That’s the probable cause of many diseases, from Long Covid, to Parkinsons, Alzheimers, heart disease, many cancers, etc. This may turn out to be an actual cure for these conditions. The Gliptins may finally allow us to hold the inflammatory response at bay without turning off the immune response, while other drugs target the disease, together with the immune system.
