Politics is just about getting things done, even at work. And rational argument is rarely what works, peoples' emotions are what work. Wish we didn't hate politicians for understanding this, and us not understanding it. They're the smart and moral ones, not us.

I do get the "it's just a bit of paper, legal thing" argument. But still dunno. That's like saying a novel is "just some paper and ink". Secularism doesn't have to mean stuff doesn't have a special, non-rational dimension.

Both sides of politics here have a fair amount of this 'disease', although the Liberals after Howard have gone all guns blazing in this direction. Which is why people like Malcolm Frazer resigned from the party in disgust. Hope it's not too late to avoid going down this American dead-end.
